Vitamin D

Vitamin D

One of the hot topics in the health world today is the importance of Vitamin D. Vitamin D is found in two major forms: D2 and D3. Vitamin D3 is the active form in the human body.

Why Is Vitamin D Good For Us?

Bones - We definitely know that Vitamin D is important for bone health. Vitamin D is necessary for calcium absorption in the gut to help maintain normal mineralization of bone. It is also needed for bone growth and bone remolding.

Immune Function - Vitamin D deficiency tends to increase the risk of infections (influenza), inflammatory diseases (arthritis), dermatological conditions (psoriasis), cancers, diabetes, and Multiple Scleroisis.

Hypertension - Some studies show that those individuals with higher Vitamin D levels exhibited lower risks of hypertension and cardiovascular events.

How Do We Get Vitamin D?

We can increase our Vitamin D by being outside. We produce Vitamin D naturally when we are exposed to direct sunlight. There are things like season, geographic latitude, smog, time of day, cloud cover, skin type and sunscreen that can affect our exposure to the sunlight that we need to produce Vitamin D.

How Do We Supplement Vitamin D?

There aren't many foods that contain Vitamin D. We can supplement by eating fish (tuna, herring, salmon, and catfish) or by taking fish liver oils. Egg, beef liver, and fortified foods (milk, breakfast cereals, and bread) are other foods that can aid Vitamin D presence. Also, Vitamin D supplements are available over the counter.

What Supplements And Recommended Doses?

The Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) recommends a daily dose for adults at 400 IU per day. Some studies show that 10,000 IU per day are safe. Many practitioners start dosing at 50,000 IU per week for 2 to 3 months, and then reduce to a daily dose around 2,000 IU per day.
